The Peninsula de Cantera community in Puerto Rico has truly embraced service learning! They have planned 3 activities to do during the planning process. The children they are working with are relatively young so they brainstormed ways in which the children would be able to grasp the concepts and issues important to this community while still being fun and interactive.

Activity 1: Tree Conservation. Community will host a puppet show themed around the conservation of trees and natural habitats. The children will then have a discussion about what they learned and then create marshmallow/toothpick trees.

Activity 2: Lessons on Recycling: The community will talk to the children about recycling and explain the importance in taking part of it. They will explain how to sort and identify recyclable materials. They will have a discussion with the children about what they learned and then they will create crafts using recycled materials so that they can understand the concept and value of reducing, recycling and reusing materials.

Activity 3: Plant Life cycle: The community will explain to the children the life cycle of plants and learning to identify native/endangered plant life on their island. They will then have a reflection activity followed by a planting ceremony in which all the children will plant seeds in a recycled bottle, take it home, and watch their plants come to life.

On build day, they will have a circuit of fun and educational stations (a craft table of recycled materials, the creation of a wild life mural, nature themed puzzles, etc) in which the kids can reflect on what they learned in service learning all while having fun!

I am currently working with a great Community Partner in San Francisco, and they have implemented an awesome service learning activity! The kids at this pre-school have been learning about healthy living, and have started doing cooking activities. For the last week, the students have worked really hard to prepare some healthy snacks for the 200+ volunteers that are coming to help Build a brand new playground for the kids!

This is a great Service Learning activity, and one of my favorite parts (besides encouraging kids to eat healthier of course) is that it can be done with many different age groups. I've seen this done on a project with K-8th graders working together, which was a great chance for the older kids to be role models and for the younger kids to have someone to look up to.

As a participant in this week's playground build, I can't wait to see what they have in store for us!
